What Are Compressor Vanes?

Compressor vanes are sliding components installed in the rotor of a rotary vane compressor. As the eccentric rotor turns, the vanes move radially against the surrounding stator or cylinder surface, creating separate chambers that progressively reduce in volume and compress air or gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all rotary vane compressors use graphite vanes?
No. Rotary vane compressors use different vane materials depending on the compressor design. Carbon or graphite vanes are common in some dry-running and oil-free compressor systems, while other compressors may use metal, fiber-reinforced composite, resin-based, or other manufacturer-specific vane materials.
Can a carbon vane replace a metal compressor vane?
Not automatically. Carbon/graphite and metal compressor vanes operate within different material, lubrication, thermal and mechanical design requirements. A material substitution should only be considered after the compressor design, rotor/stator geometry, operating conditions and original material specification have been reviewed.
Can two compressor vanes with the same dimensions use different materials?
Yes. Compressor vanes with identical external dimensions can use completely different material systems and therefore have different friction, strength, thermal expansion, wear and lubrication requirements.
Can CARBOLVE reproduce a worn compressor vane?
A worn vane can provide useful geometric and wear information, but it may not reveal the original unworn dimension, exact material grade, original tolerances or approved operating limits. Compressor model and operating information should also be provided.
Does low compressor pressure always mean the vanes are worn?
No. Worn or sticking vanes can contribute to pressure loss, but leaks, blocked filters, rotor/stator damage, valves, piping, cooling, mechanical wear, and other compressor-system issues can also reduce pressure.
